I have been speaking to the Sound Engineer at The Croft today and he's beginning to become concerned with the attitude of some of the hardcore bands at The Croft in relation to the gear that he supplies.
Anyone who knows the head Engineer, Paul, knows that he's not only really cool guy who provides the venue with some great equipment and top sound, but he's also very laid back and generally doesn't like to complain about things, which is one of the reasons why I am a little bit concerned.
Both Paul and I know that the hardcore shows are all about having a good time and we know that things can damaged in the heat of the moment, but would the bands and promoters who post on this forum please appreciate what Paul gives to The Croft, and in turn, what The Croft provides for the local hardcore scene.
To put things in perspective, Paul normally gets paid between £50 and £70 a show, yet to replace a broken microphone will cost £80 which is obviously false economy. I would also like to make the point that because there is a disproportionate amount of non-drinkers who attend hc shows at The Croft, that the amount of money we make a night isn't enough to be able to cover these breakages ourselves.
My points aren't just in relation to the show that happened last night, so if you were involved with this show either in the organising or as a band please don't think this is something that is directed solely at you since this is something that has been going on for a while.
In conclusion, no-one expects the gear to be bulletproof and we accept that accidents happen, but please can performers ensure that they treat the gear that Paul provides with the same respect that you would expect someone to treat your gear.
If anyone has any feedback on what could be done to prevent these incidents from happening, then please feel free to drop me an e-mail at matt_otridge[at]hotmail[dot]com or reply to this thread!
