I'm really interested to hear what peoples perceptions/observations of it are. Particulary those from people who don't live in Bristol.
I think the shows here have improved tenfold in the last 18 months. Bristol used to be good for shows, there was always good bands playing here, AFI, SHUTDOWN, SICK OF IT ALL, all played the fleece a while ago. However it turned really shit for a while with no shows and no people turning up at the few shows there was. Now though, there are shows every month, and loads of people involved trying to do things. And theres an awesome venue- The Croft. Its getting better but there are things that can be improved in my opinion:
More DIY Shows, with UK bands playing for cheaper. Myself and Fran try to do this, but why dont others give it a shot? there can never be to many shows..
Less drunk gubbas turning up and standing at the front with their pints and fags trying to push everyone. (These people are always at NWS shows!)
More Bristol based hardcore bands. Wales has an abundance of them. Why doesn't Bristol?
Better dancing, haha! (ok that ones kinda jokes, but partly true)
So what does everyone think??

The Bristol scene is getting better and better imo. It still seems to me like theres kids turning up who aint gotta a clue and a - dance like a dick or b - tag along with a band member and doesnt know jack shit about hardcore dancing and wants to punch anyone who gets to close to them. some of you might not of witnessed it but it happen at the ninebar show....fucking prick!!! all in all though, it rules. the croft is a sweet little venue for the type of shows which are being put on, plus its good to see the same faces when i actually get to Bristol. BUT - Bristol to me seems more metal than hardcore.

Yes it is more about metal. There are only a couple of true hardcore bands, in the sense of the music they play. What is it about drunk pricks?! arghhhhh! I saw the Ninebar guy, its also happened at Ignite, and various other shows. People need to learn.

What's wrong with liking both? Most people do. More cross genre bills i say.

I definately think the Bristol scene is on the up and will continue to grow. I have noticed though that the turn out of bristol kids to hardcore shows seems quite low at times... the BDO show being a prime example - the majority of people were from outside of Bristol. I think the Bristol kids need to realise what a good thing they have got on their own doorstep thanks to people like Fran and Aimee putting in a lot of hardwork. I always enjoy the shows in the croft - great little venue.

Bristol is 100% on the rise in my opinion. I haven't been attending shows at the croft for all THAT long, but it has improved so much since i first started coming.
Alot of real good bands are starting to come through bristol now thanks to Aimee and Fran (and sometimes dead punk). I can only see it getting better from here, as long as local kids start coming to shows and supporting smaller shows, as well as the bigger ones.
Since Christmas i have been seriously skint...........and id be the first to admit i haven't been the best at turning up to shows........but when I'm sorted out I'm gonna try and get to most.
Sweaty topless people pushing each other is fine by me as long as they are having fun.......but also as long as the people who do want to "dance" have the space to do it as well. I dont think they are being purposely irritating, i think they just purely "Do tn get it"
In reply to Aimee.... Me and Moe were looking at putting on the Sinking Ships and Ruiner tour but it was bit too much of a risk as i dint think they would have brought in enough people for us not to loose a few hundred quid.........hopefully in the future it could be feasible to do a show like that in bristol, but right now i don't think they have the pulling power of someone like Bane who have that sort of "novelty" value. AND i wouldnt want the band to play a empty show, or show with loads of people who dont really get or appreciate the music your playing, because i know how it feels, and if you are on a tour , shows liek that can be a bit depressing.

First off, thank you all for safe comments.
I agree that the people who attend the bigger shows are the people who need to be clued up on the DIY shows that go on in Bristol every month, this is exactly the point of Ben's newsletter (which i think is an awesome idea!). Over August we have the opportunity to get this newsletter spread to two massive audiences at Madball and Bane/Have Heart...after those shows i predict there will eb a surge in 'unknown' kids from Bristol supporting the other shows people do.
As far as crossover shows go.....i'm with Liam. I think combining hardcore and metal at shows is the most healthy option, a) it makes 'breaking-even' a fuckload more likely and b) i'm a fan of going to shows and discovering new bands....this mainly happens at gigs with varied line-ups as there's only so much hardcore/metal i can take in one night.
Bristol, since early 2006 and so far in 2007 has had some really succesful shows, all it takes is for the people who currently attend shows to bring one friend each time they come to a show to keep it that way. At the moment, i'm really happy to be helping what ultimatley could be a pretty rad scene and i'll continue to bring bands to Bristol so long as a decent amount of people keep coming to the shows.
Arran, after Shadow Law come back from the tours we've got lined up i'm probably gonna put together a hardcore band so you'll get your wish there!!

p.s Hopefully the newsletter Ben, Andy and myself put together will help, as Fran has said.
Just for the record i don't want it to seem like I'm stepping on anyones toes with this newsletter thing seeing as I'm not really from bristol, and there are people that have been involved ALOT longer than me.
But we are planning to make it a regular thing, so it would be sweet for everyone to get involved with it. It could be anything, writing an article, helping with the artwork, saying why the last one was shit, and how to improve it, and so on.

where to start!
first off...push moshing is absolutely fine by me. Yeh it can be frustrating if your fav riff has just been layed down and you so badly wanna go nuts and there is no room. But equally annoying (in my eyes) is a room full of co-ordinated dance routines. So each to their own. We can all do our own thing without stepping on each others toes most of the time. prime example was Burning skies in bristol. Primarily was all about the push mosh. But a pit was opene up towards the end without any aggro.
It is weird that bristol seems to have a shortage of bands. But remember wales is a country and Bristol is a city so by default there are less bands anyway. But it would be awesomse to see some new amazing bands come out of nowhere from bristol.
Crossover shows, all good really! gives people who might not usually wanna see a certain band an operunity to check them out! That is if they fucking stick around and dont leave after their mates band! Iv often thought about putting on a show at the hatchet. Cheaper option that the croft. less floor space but that could make the shows more fun/dangerous!
An yeh hopefully that newsletter will have clicked with a few kids. People need to appreciate the effort a lot of people are putting in as its not a walk in the park! or in the wallet!
Another thing for this would be OUTREACH! flyer in places that havnt been flyered before! College green is full of goths and punks and kids who could easily find hardcore appealing! how about slipping flyers into the kerrangs and rocksounds of newsagents. I know most of us dont read those magazines but its an easy way for some kids to find out about local shows. Simon suggested flyering at club nights in the academy. If none of this works then we need to have a think why none of it is appealing to anybody. Should we be integrating some crust or anarcho punk bands into hardcore shows? most of those kids relate to DIY pretty heavily! An what Fran said! bringing a friend to a show is easy! who knows they may become a regular!
Also its nice to see that bands are working together and not competing against each other. Hardore should be a firm example of how that works better than fucking dog eat dog attitude you see in other genres! fuck all that personal gain shit!
also if anyone has any ideas for content in the next "bristol hardcore newsletter" drop your ideas in the other thread! safe

I actually do this already man, i put flyers in HMV/Virgin etc etc mixed in with hardcore bands CD's, aswell as slipping them in Terrorizer, Metal Hammer, Kerrang and Rock Sound issues in newsagents that stock them. College Green was flyered hard as fuck for BDO and Woundfest, kinda got in trouble with the 5-0 for littering but fuck it, Police ain't got shit on The Corleone Family ! I put posters up in over 25 places around Bristol (Ranging from skate and music shops to Cafes and pubs). Flyering at The Acadmey and Bierkeller is something i should do, but i try and spend as little time in places like them as possible. In the little spare time i get in life i like to grace reggae and hip-hop places more then student filled cuntholes (no offence to mandem who go there all the time!) All this shit is hard work to do single handed, and to be honest.... i don't have the time to do it aswell as i probbaly should with work and Shadow Law!

Bristol must be the only place in the country that has shows filled from people who aren't from Bristol. This doesn't surprise me, cause i have never seen any paper flyers anywhere. As far as i know the only paper flyers that have been made for shows have been made and printed by me and Andy. (I know Fran made some for the last show). Its no wonder when the only kids who are hearing about shows are the internet myspazz kids.
Mixed bills are good, but when is there ever a true hardcore show with only hardcore bands playing in Bristol? Never.
I was thinking about that sinking ships show, but i agree i wouldn't take the chance, plus i reckon Alex will be doing it by now any way.

I must admit i've only done a few shows and it's always been for Broken Oath but if i didn't make flyers and make the effort to hand them out i would be cacking it. I always want to be able to give them a good amount of money and i would feel like a cunt if they ended up losing £££ because of a lack of motivation on my part.
And what's wrong with just putting on a GOOD show with GOOD bands as opposed to setting out to put on purely a Hardcore show or a Metal show.
